THE sandhill crane is so often con-fused, in the popular mind, with the great blue heron, thatit may not be amiss to suggestthe real differences between them. Weshould first remember that the crane isnot found east of Illinois, except casuallyor accidently, but is numerous from Illin-ois westward to the western border of theplains during the migrations. It rangesas far north as Manitoba. The greatblue heron is pretty evenly distributedover the whole of North America. Thecranes usually, if not always, migrate ingreater or lesser flocks, alternately cir-cling upward to considerable heights andsailing straight away, with both soaringand flapping motion, and with prodigiouscroakings. The herons migrate singlyor in pairs, with long, steady sweep ofthe wings, and make no outcry. Closeat hand the two species would hardly beconfused by an ordinarily careful obser-ver, but these large birds are rare
