Thus you will see there were two vacancies in the consolidated company, This being the case and our Capt and remaining Lieut (Harris) being in very delicate health, Genl French ?s chief of Artillery (Maj Storrs) to whose Battaline[Battalion?] ever belonged at the instance of Genl French, ordered an election for two (2) junior Lieuts, The election was held, and Larry Murphy and Sam M. Kennard were elected and ordered immediately on duty ? While in position around Atlanta, we were ordered before a board for examination. The members of the board were Maj Storrs Capt Slocum and Capt Barrett, their report was favorable and we were led to believe that our positions were secured us, but on account of the informality [paper torn, words missing] election, we have been unable to procure commissions [words missing] now that the campaign is over and there are [words missing] hardships to be endured, we are told that [words missing] return[?] to our former positions in company and allow some of the supernumery Officers who have not yet been assigned to duty in the consolidated Baty[Battery]
