Nizwa fortress, Oman
The impressive walls of Nizwa fort have been the dominant force in this part of Oman since the 17thC. When Thesiger travelled in this region in the 1940s and 50s his guides warned him that he would certainly be killed if he dared to set foot in Nizwa.
