The candy-striped Cape Hatteras Light Station has long been a major attraction in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, USA.

The black-and-white candy-striped Cape Hatteras Light Station is easy to recognize and has long been a major attraction in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, USA. Visitors can climb 257 steps to reach the top of this historic brick lighthouse, which is the tallest in the United States at 208 feet (63 meters). Its powerful beacon first went on in 1870 and the light can be seen at sea as far away as 20 miles (32 kilometers). Because of beach erosion from storms and hurricanes over the decades, the lighthouse was moved farther inland in 1999 to save it from toppling into the Atlantic Ocean.
