Venice, Italy - 5 September 2017 Venice is one of the great cities of the world, famed for its canals, sublime architecture, beauty and exotic history. It is also inundated by tourists for much of the year, stupidly expensive, often smelly and slowly sinking into the Adriatic. Oh dear - you pick. At the very heart of historic Venice is St Marks Square, graced by three iconic buildings - St Marks Basilica, the Ducal Palace and Bell Tower. A tower of some sort has been located at the corner of Piazza San Marco since the 9th Century. The San Marco Campanile has had a disaster-prone history, having been repeatedly damaged or destroyed by fire or lightning, and restored many times. The present 99m edifice dates from 1912. The Lion of Venice, shown here, is an ancient bronze winged lion sculpture in square; this came to symbolize the city - as well as its patron saint, St Mark - after its arrival there in the 12th century.
