A widely-distributed and variable species, ex-tending along the east coast as far south asGrahamstown and northwards into Nyassaland,though not yet recorded for Natal; it occurs inthe Kalahari region, extends into Bechuanaiand,where both the ill-fated travellers Burchell andHolub discovered it, and attains to the west coastin German South-West Africa and Angola. Flowers white, veryshortly pedicelled; bracts linear-subulate, de-ciduous. Receptacle 6 to 8 mm. long, the lowerpart narrowly fusiform, the upper cupular, 4 to5 mm. diameter, hairy within, with spreadingtriangular acute calyx-segments; disk withlong hairs. Petals absent. Stamens glabrous,4 to 6 mm. long. Style stoutly subulate, pilosetowards the base. Fruit two-winged, pedicellate,ochre-brown, elliptic, often broadly truncatelyor emarginately cuspidate, abruptly truncate orattenuate at the base. 3 to cm. long, 2 , thickly and softly pubescent all over, oreventually sparingly puberulous, the bodyraised, the wings flat and 5 to 7 mm. broad;pedicel 2 to 3 mm. long, pubescent.
