The characteristic difference between this stage and those previouslyillustrated, resides in the fact that the bridges, instead of having theirplanes of vibration at right angles with the stage, have them in a directionparallel to the length of the stage, an ingenious device (however obviousit may seem), adopted by Mr. Hartley to meet the want of the particularlocality in which it had to be erected of keeping the whole width of thebasin clear of all permauent obstructions throughout its length.
