The train maintenance building of the Stratford Market Depot is the award winning creation of Chris Wilkinson Architects and cost around GBP 19 million This futuristic building known as the supershed is 208,000 square feet (330 x 600 feet) and a major contribution to the London Underground Jubilee Line Extension. Its unique design was influenced by track formation, site restrictions, architectural considerations and a strong emphasis on natural lighting. The depot holds 11 complete trains at any one time and all types of inspection, maintenance and repair can be undertaken from routine cleaning to complete overhauls It is a huge space inside so particular emphasis was placed on natural lighting architectural detail choice of color and materials The Stratford Market Depot was amongst the winners of the prestigeous 1997 British Construction Industry Awards.
