Historical hydraulic boat lifts. View inside one of a series of four boat lifts on the Canal du Centre built between 1888 and 1917. The lifts were designed to overcome the fact that the water level across one 7 kilometre section of the canal rises by metres. They are the last set of hydraulic lift locks left in the world and were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998. They are still in operation today, but only for recreational use. Commercial traffic now passes through a modern lift on a different section of the canal. Photographed between La Louviere and Thieu, Wallonia, Belgium.
