Mariner 9 Mars mosaic images. Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) employee Patsy Conklin creating mosaic images of the surface of Mars using data from the Mariner 9 space probe. In the pre-computer image manipulation era, such mosaics were created by hand, taped in place on a large black board. This process was used in 1971 and 1972 for both the Mariner 9 and Viking Orbiter missions. JPL produced 96 mosaic boards of selected areas of the Martian surface, and the United States Geological Survey (USGS) created others. A photo mosaic was also created on a four-foot globe.
