Ephesus, Turkey woman weaving Turkish rug. Turkish carpets and rugs, whether hand knotted or flat woven are among the most well known, beautiful and established hand crafted art works in the world. Natural fiber threads made of wool, cotton and silk are used to hand tie knots. The Government is helping to establish small business by encouraging and subsidizing industries such as this. Women are trained and taught how to make beautiful rugs. The highest quality silk rugs have about 1,200 knots per square inch. Normally wool is about 65 and silk is about 100 knots per square inch.
