Rice bran oil research. Chemist removing rice bran oil that has been extracted using a high-pressure fractionating column. The extract contains an enriched level of phytosterols (plant chemicals similar to cholesterol). Rice bran is a byproduct of the rice milling process, where brown rice is polished and its outer layers removed to produce white rice. Each oil fraction from the rice bran has different properties and nutritive values. This research is being carried out by the Agricultural Research Service of the US Department of Agriculture.
