Coalminers underground, Lancashire coalfield, 1948

The faces on these Lancashire miners says it all - they have a job, but they're not going to pretend that they enjoy it. In fact, it's hell. The angle of the photograph and some innate logic would seem to suggest that these men have finished their shift and are heading for the surface, but their expressions suggest the opposite.
