Tularemia Ulcer

Tularemia lesion on the back of patient's hand. Tularemia is caused by the bacterium Francisella tularensis. Symptoms vary depending on how the person was exposed to the disease and can include skin ulcers. Francisella tularensis is a Gram-negative rod-shaped (though pleomorphic) bacillus bacteria, which is non-motile. It is an insect-borne pathogen of rabbits, squirrels and other rodents in many countries notably the western USA and Russia. Ticks, fleas, flies, may transmit the organism. Treatment is with antibiotics.
