Captain Anderson entered the regular service by ap-pointment as second lieutenant of the Twenty-fifth L*. , August 10, 1867, and served as quartermasterand commissary at Columbia, Newberry, and Greenville,South Carolina, and was transferred to the EighteenthInfantry April 26, 1869. He was promoted first lieu-tenant October 17, 1878, and served in his regimentuntil April, 1879, when he moved with it to Fort Assin-niboin, Montana, participating in the campaign in North-. ern Montana against Sioux Indians under Sitting Hulland Gall, during the months of January and February,[881. His regiment was transferred to the Indian Terri-tory in 1885, and while on duty at Fort Gibson he wasmade regimental quartermaster, to date from November,1889. The regiment subsequently moved to Texas, andhe was stationed with the head-quarters at Fort Clarkuntil promoted a captain June 21, 1S90, when he wasrelieved as quartermaster and joined his company. Captain Anderson comes from old New England of his ancestors, Colonial Governor Bradford, was oneof the Mayflower colony which landed at Plymouth in1620, and was an active participant in the events of thatperiod. His ancestors also served in the war for Americanindependence.
