Thin-film thermocouples. Thermocouples, used for temperature measurements, are based on the thermoelectric effect between two metals. Thin-film versions (TFTs) are used to measure temperature rises due to the absorption of ultrasound. The TFT is deposited on a thin circular membrane with a diameter of around 50 millimetres. The holding frame is around 85 millimetres across. The overall thickness of the frame is less than 5 millimetres. One junction of the thermocouple is in the centre of the membrane, while the other is near the edge of the frame. Photographed at the National Physical Laboratory, Teddington, UK.
