Driving wheel of Stirling Single steam locomotive within the National Railway Museum, York, England.

"Patrick Stirling was responsible for the design of the GNR 4-2-2 steam locomotive No. 1. Built with a single pair of driving wheels of diameter 8' 1, it was known as an 'eight-footer'. Locomotives of this type were successful in hauling relatively light trains at high speed between York and London. The large single wheel ensured free running with the technology of the time, but such locomotives were not able to cope with increasing train weights. Locomotives of this class competed in the railway Race to the North in 1895."
