A sunflower head is aften referred to as a 'flower'. In fact it is an inflorescence made up of many tiny flowers known as florets. The outer ones create the petals and are sterile. Those in the centre eventually mature into seeds and are arranged in spiral patterns based on Fibonacci Numbers.
