China: The Tianqi Emperor (23 December 1605 – 30 September 1627), 16th ruler of the Ming Dynasty (r. 1620 - 1627). Hanging scroll painting, c. 1620-1627. The Tianqi Emperor, personal name Zhu Youjiao and temple name Xizong, was the 16th emperor of the Ming Dynasty. His era name means 'Heavenly Opening'. Zhu Youjiao became emperor at the age of fifteen. He did not pay much attention to affairs of state, and was a puppet ruler for the court eunuch Wei Zhongxian and his wet nurse Madame Ke. It is possible that he suffered from a learning disability, as he was illiterate but an amazing carpenter
