Saint Sebastian Interceding for the Plague Stricken painted by Josse Lieferinxe (circa 1497–1499). Sebastian was a member of the Roman Praetorian Guard who converted to Christianity. He was shot through with arrows but did not die from these wounds. He was tended by Irene (later Saint Irene). After his recovery he went to speak to Emperor Diocletian of his faith and was beaten to death.
