Harvest scene on the Messara Plain in Crete, Greece.

Harvest scene on the Messara Plain in Crete, Greece. The Messara Plain is an alluvial plain in southern Crete, stretching about 50 km west-to-east making it the largest plain in Crete. On a hill at its west end are the ruins of Phaestus and near the middle are the ruins of the ancient city of Gortys. It is a large source of olive oil for domestic use as well as being exported to European markets. Crete was once the center of the Minoan civilization (c. 2700–1420 BC), which is currently regarded as the earliest recorded civilization in Europe
