Sgt. M. Fineberg took this photograph, number 111-SC-27560, on October 17, 1918. The image shows Pvt. Demetry Melonisk, known as the "Strong Man" of the 315th Field Hospital, holding a 300-pound bell. Melonisk carried the bell from the trenches to his company's camp, where it is now used for gas and air raid alarms. This bell was originally used by the Germans for the same purpose. The photo was taken at Ferme Notre Dame de Palameix in Meuse, France, and belongs to the collection of Photographs of American Military Activities during World War One.
