The Portland Rose Society held its annual meeting at the Chamber of Com- merce Monday, February 6. Guy W. Talbot was elected president. Other officers chosen for the ensuing year were: First vice-president, Jesse A. Currey; second vice-president, Otto W. Mulkey; secretary, Charles E. Gueffoy; treasurer, Ray Jubitz. Announce- ment was made that arrangements had been completed for affiliation of the local society with the American Rose Society and the National Rose Society of England. Plans for a membership campaign were discussed. An educa- tional campaign in rose culture will be undertaken in the schools, under the direction of a committee to be appointed by the president of the society. Dem- onstrations in rose pruning were given by J. C. Backer, and A. J. Clarke gave a talk on pruning and advised the mem- bers not to prune later than March 1, in order to bring them into bloom at the time of the rose festival. H. J. Biasing, the retiring president, told of his recent visit to the European rose gardens. Niklas & Son report a good call for bulbous stock this season. Their stock is of good quality. Several men of the Wilson Crout-Gehr Co. are confined at home with attacks of grip. Clarke Bros, are making a consider- able show with lilies, daffodils and va- rious pot plants. N. V. H.
