A C15th effigy of a pilgrim in a cusped recess in the north chapel of St Helen's Church, Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire, England, UK. Said to be Thomas, brother of William, Lord Hastings who was Lord Chancellor to Edward IV: Thomas' high status & royal connection through his brother Willian are indicated by his livery Collar of Esses (SS). He is bareheaded, the hair long & cut straight round in C15th fashion. His head rests on two cushions & a broad-rimmed hat prodrudes from under his right shoulder, the scallop shell indicates that he has travelled beyond the sea (especially to Santiago de Compostela in NW Spain). He wears a pilgrim cloak known as a sclavine (sclavin) which reaches nearly to his ankles. Short, open oversleeves show the full undersleeves reaching to the wrist. There is a string of beads in front of his left shoulder. Over the right shoulder is a narrow belt carrying his scrip (small bag or pouch) with scallop shells on it. Under his left wrist is a staff with a square knob on top. His feet, in short, pointed-toed boots laced at the front, rest on a dog. There are inscriptions & graffiti on the folds of his cloak.
