An Italian View, c. 1810? . Rebell’s early work, such as this Italian view, had strong overtones of classicism and was influenced by Claude Lorrain’s heroic depictions of the landscape. Rebell spent long periods in Italy, first visiting Milan in 1810, Naples in 1813, and Rome in 1816. More active as a painter, he made a small number of prints. This evocative etching printed on brown paper and enlivened with white heightening reveals his painterly inclinations.
