A scene after the Colney Hatch Lunatic Asylum fire which took place on 27th January 1903. In all 52 female patients in the Jewish Wing died in the worst peacetime fire in London's history. Situated in New Southgate, the asylum , also known as Middlesex County Asylum housed many inmates in timber and corrugated wards (listed at the time as being constructed of pine and tarpaper) . After the fire, the asylum was renamed Friern Hospital and since the 1990's has been used for luxury apartments under the name of Princess Park Manor. No memorial was ever erected for the victims of the fire.
