Tops are small and Beets are rounded on top, but flat at bottom end. The color of flesh is dark and light red and the Beets are tender. Pkt, 5 cts.; oz., 10 cts.; £ lb., 30 cts.; lb., § Crimson Qlobe. (See cut.) This Beet is remarkable for its smooth skin and fine shape. It is a second early variety, does not grow large and coarse, the matured Beets being medium in size and of good shape. The flesh and skin are both very dark and quality fine, being sweet and tender. Pkt., 5 cts.; oz., 15 cts.; i lb., 45 cts.; lb., CULTURE.—Fibrous loam, well-drained and well-enriched, will raise good Beet crops. For early table Beets, have drills 16 to 20 inches apart, and sow the seed about 1 inch deep, as early as the ground can be put in good shape. Or seed may be sown under glass four weeks sooner, and the young seedlings transplanted to open ground, to give an exta early crop. Give thorough and clean cultivation, and thin the plants to stand 3 to 4 inches apart in the rows. For succession sow at intervals until middle of July. For the earliest sowings a light dressing of nitrate of soda, say 100 pounds per acre, will sometimes work wonders. Dreer's Excelsior Blood. (See colored plate and page 8.)
