Their salaries,such as they are, are paid by the Patriarch inwhose province they live, out of the revenue ofthe patriarchate, these revenues in the case ofthe Jerusalem patriarchate, which includes allPalestine, being very large. One priest, withwhom I am personally acquainted, has a salary ofeighteen shillings a month, which would be anaverage stipend in a small village; in the largervillages they receive proportionally more.
