Stress patterns in glass fragments revealed by polarised light. The glass is illuminated by polarised and coloured light. As the light passes throught the glass fragments, the plane of polarisation may be rotated by areas under stress. When the light passes through a second polarising filter and into the camera, the different degrees of rotation show as different colours. The stress patterns may arise from cooling processes during manufacture and from mechanical stress when the glass was broken.
