He nevertouched the main land of North America, though on his thirdvoyage he visited the coast of South America. In 1499,Americus Vespucius, a bold and intelligent navigator, pub-lished a map of the coast of North America, and wrote vividdescriptions of the lands he visited, so that his contempora-ries named the continent America, in his honor.
