At a regimental inspection heldthe next day after returning to our camp, General Howard ad-dressed the men at length, told us to keep in good heart, thankedus for doing so well and proving ourselves such good soldiersunder the terrible ordeal through which we had just passed,hoped we would continue to do our full duty as citizens andsoldiers, defend the constitution and laws of our country and pre-serve her institutions, paid a high tribute of respect to the fallenand kindly remembered the woundefi, thanked us again for sus-taining him an
