Rescued Circus Children After the death of his wife Philip an ex army dentist decided to set up a trust working with children in her memory He met Major Khem an ex Ghurkha who suggested he looked at the situation of children who are sold or abducted into working in Indian circuses Because Nepalis are smaller and fairer than Indians the girls are particularly prized as performers Hundreds of children are living and working in dreadful conditions deliberately starved so they remained thin and sexually abused as the circuses are often little more than brothels Many of the girls became pregnant and were forced to have abortions Philip and Khem set about rescuing them and have now set up 2 hostels near the Indian border where the children can recover from their ordeal rediscover their childhood and receive an education They are also reunited with their families Bhairawa home for rescued circus children Lucie Noble physiotherapist with Reena who has a leg injury from when she was beaten in the circus
