The late C15th rood screen & loft across the entrance to the Sanctuary of St Jerome's Church, Llangwm Uchaf, Monmouthshire, Wales, UK.

The late C15th rood screen & loft across the entrance to the Sanctuary of St Jerome's Church, Llangwm Uchaf, Monmouthshire, Wales, UK: one of the finest in Britain. The screen was sensitively restored by Seddon in 1863-9 who also designed some of the Victorian church fittings (lectern etc.) & floor tiles. The Medieval screen would have been brightly coloured (polychrome) & topped by a Crucifixion scene. Traces of green, red & blue paint on the screen date from the C19th but reflect pre-Reformation practices. Since this photo was taken in January 1995 the church has become redundant, placed in the keeping of the Friends of Friendless Churches, & the altar etc. removed. When first built, the altar would have been behind the screen.
