Through a $5,700 grant provided by the Ventura Fish and Wildlife Office, the school is creating a 57,000 square foot native habitat on school grounds. Students, teachers and community members will have the opportunity to study cyclic and seasonal natural phenomena in relation to climate and plant and animal life. Many of the plants in the habitat were once used by the Chumash tribe for both food and medicine. This project gives us the ability to create a habitat where students can see what California might have looked like when the Chumash were the only people on the land, and promote plants not only for our own home usage but also as part of the ecosystem, said Stephen Stokes, principal of Simi Valley Adventist school. This March, the school, community members, congressional representatives and Service staff joined together to kick off the spring planting season. This project is the first of its kind in Simi Valley, and once complete, has the potential to be the largest Fish and Wildlife Service Schoolyard Habitat in the nation. (
