The log, after the manner of itskind, makes no pretensions to literary skill,but as a narration of what happened day byday in a remote, desolate, and seldom visitedpart of the world, it tells its own story in itsown way and needs little by way of introduc-tion. If the log is perhaps at times diffuseand too explanatory, it is because the keeperof it has been anxious to inform her possible readers, with reasonable fulness, on pointswith which few people are supposed to befamiliar. While such details are, for the mostpart, given incidentally in the log itself, a fewwords here follow in regard to the prepara-tions for the cruise and the fitting out of thevessel. My brother. Col.
