Weathered surface ofLondon clay, full I can cite instances which prove that considerable force has beeninvolved in this process. In a railway-cutting near Wivenhoe,in Essex, I found at the side of a valley one of these farrows inLondon clay, about 13 feet deep, filled with such sand and gravel ascaps the tableland around. The clay, for the thickness of 4 or 5inches, was kneaded into a plastic state, laminated, and full through-out of polished surfaces of slickensides, showing that the trail whichfilled the furrow had been pushed forwards under great pressure, 558 PROCEEDINGS OF THE GEOLOGICAL SOCIETY. [JunC 20, and had carried forward with it the surface on which it rested. Afew pebbles, which had become engaged in the claj, had received aconsiderable amount of polish. The weathering extended about asfar as the clay had been moved. A specimen of this clay is depo-sited in the Society^s Museum. Similar instances were seen by Dawkins and myself at Walton-on-the-jSaze, and by ProfessorLiveing and myself at Aldborough
