Tay Bridge disaster. Engraving of the Tay Bridge disaster in Scotland. People in boats are looking for survivors and examining the wrecked bridge the morning after the accident, which occurred in the evening of 28 December 1879. The disaster occurred when a section of the bridge collapsed as a railway train was crossing it during a storm. The accident cost 73 lives. This bridge was designed by English engineer Sir Thomas Bouch. The bridge was comprised of 85 spans which reached up to 30 metres above the water and had a total length of kilometres (km). An enquiry found that 13 of the spans had failed because of an inadequate design and manufacturing faults.
