Biomineralisation bacteria, scanning electron microscope (SEM). This limestone matrix has been produced by the embedded Bacillus cereus bacteria (small oval shapes) as they feed on nutrients and minerals. Jean-Francois Loubiere, founder of the company Calcite Bioconcept, has developed a way to use this biomineralisation process to preserve historical stone monuments. The bacteria are sprayed onto the stone with a nutrient base, and the layer of limestone produced protects the stone monuments against further erosion.
