Komodo Island is located in the Lesser Sunda Island east of Bali. The Wallace Line, faunal boundary that passes east of Bali and divides Asiatic species from Australasian fauna. Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis) are an endemic species in the Lesser Sunda Islands where movement of flora and fauna between islands is limited, leading to the evolution of a high rate of localized species.
