YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, California — Towering giant sequoias reach skyward in Mariposa Grove, their massive trunks dwarfing visitors on the forest trail. These ancient trees, some over 2,000 years old, showcase the awe-inspiring scale and longevity of Yosemite's iconic redwood ecosystem.
Photograph by David Coleman. Mariposa Grove, located in the southern part of Yosemite National Park, is home to over 500 mature giant sequoias, some of the largest and oldest living organisms on Earth. These majestic trees, with their distinctive reddish-brown bark and immense stature, create an otherworldly forest landscape. The grove features several famous named trees, including the Grizzly Giant, estimated to be about 3,000 years old, and the California Tunnel Tree, a fallen sequoia with a path cut through it. Visitors can explore the grove via a network of hiking trails that wind among these natural giants, offering up-close views of their massive trunks and an appreciation for the complex forest ecosystem they support. Recently renovated to better protect the sensitive root systems of the sequoias, Mariposa Grove now offers a more sustainable visitor experience. The area combines natural wonder with educational opportunities, teaching visitors about the importance of forest conservation and the unique characteristics of sequoia ecology.
