Rufus Haywood grew to manhood on thefarm, received his education at Jaffrey academy,and then was engaged for five years in teachingin the district .schools of New Hampshire. Atthe end of that time he went to Wiuchendon,Mass., where for over one year he conducted abutcher shop and livery stable. He thenreturned to Jalfrey, property onwhich he built, and embarked in farming andmerchandising. After three years he removedto Cambriilge, Mass., where, in company with. Leaving Belvidere, hepurchased a larni near Chicago, and embarkedin the cattle business. With remarkable fore- siglit he looked foi-ward (o a brigiit future for !Chicago, saw in its commanding position thecertainty of its future commercial supremacy asone of the great cities of the American continent,and invested in that city largely in real estate,which yielded him handsome returns in his salesof the same. In ISilo he settled in Erocton,this county, and engaged for several years in thestock business. In 1S61 he and his brother,Albert Haywood, and a Mr. Hubbell, formed apartnership
