The infections have been given various local names,most of them derived from some characteristic of the in-jury inflicted. xVs they will be conunonly encountered undersuch designations, they are here described under thosetitles, all of which might be generally termed soil-sick orcotton-sick conditions. Cotton Wilt, or Frenching The cotton wilt, now widely distributed and yearlyl^re-em]jting more territory, is caused by a fungus thatplugs the water ducts in the veins of the stem and cuts offthe water supply to the parts above, always reducing thevii>or of the ])lant and usually causing s])eedy death.
