Some of the expenses were defrayed by Pro-fessor Winckler from funds placed at his disposal. ^Miile Makridy Bey, of the Ottoman Museum, had started the newexcavations in April, the government archeologist, Daniel Krencker,and Dr. Ludwig Curtius, who were at first commissioned by thecentral direction of the institute, could not set out before the end ofMay and begin their work before the first of June.
