George Boole (1815-1864), British mathematician. Boole, largely self-taught, was a school teacher for several years before being appointed professor of mathematics at Queen's College, Cork, Ireland. In 1847 he developed a new form of algebra (Boolean algebra) to link the disciplines of mathematics and formal logic. Boolean algebra has proved invaluable in the design of digital computers, and formed the basis of many fields of mathematics such as probability and statistics.
