Footballer Geoff Thomas started his football career in 1982 playing for Rochdale. He made a move to Crew Alexandra in 1984 until 1987 when he was transfered to Crystal Palace until 1993. Here he captained the team in the 1990 FA cup Final against Manchester United. He made 249 appearances and was picked to play for England making 9 appearances between 1991-1992. He also went on to play for Wolverhampton Wanderers 1993/97, Nottingham Forest 1997/99, Barnsley 1999/2001, Notts County 2001. He moved back to Crew Alexandra were he retired from professional football 2003. In June 2003 he was diagnosed with a rare form of Leukaemia, Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia that he has since recovered from. He is now a keen cyclist and raised over £150,000 for Leukaemia Research by cycling 2200 miles of the 2005 Tour de France route in 21 days. He also won BBC Sports personality of the year 2005. He has set up a charity to raise funds for the treatment of cancer, "The Geoff Thomas Foundation". In 2008 he published a book,Riding Through The Storm: My Fight Back To Fitness on the Tour de France.
