Wollaston battery pile. Historical illustration of the battery designed in the 1810s by British chemist William Hyde Wollaston (1766-1828). This design consists of seven plates immersed in an acid in glass containers. The plates are a U-shaped piece of copper, with a plate of zinc inside (cork prevents the metals touching). Wires at the terminals (left and right) allow connection to supply power to a circuit. Wollaston's design allowed the zinc-copper plates in the battery to be raised out of the acid, making it last longer.
