Antique Chinese Republic Period Porcelain Tile. Wu Jinhe Kiln, Chaozhou, c. 1912-1925


Beautiful early Republic period Chinese porcelain tile with a hand-painted scene depicting scholar with his young attendant. Inscribed in the upper left corner and with Wu Jinhe kiln stamp on the back. These tiles were made in a kiln called Wu Jinhe in Chaozhou, Guangdong province, China. Martin van Straaten, a Dutch tile dealer in London, imported Chinese tiles until their quality deteriorated in the early 1920s. Van Straaten then sourced supply from Holland, sending Chinese tiles as samples. Tiles from Tichelaar factory show very similar designs. Tile measures approx. 13x13 cm, frame cm.
