Edmund Gunter was a Welsh mathematician. In 1624 he published a collection of his mathematical works entitled: "The description and use of sector, the cross-staff, and other instruments for such as are studious of mathematical practice". One of the most remarkable things about this book is that it was written, and published, in English not Latin. It was a manual not for cloistered university fellows but for sailors and surveyors in real world.
