I-SAAN airship, historical image. The I-SAAN was a semi-rigid airship built by the Italian engineer Umberto Nobile (1885-1978) and used by the Norwegian polar explorer Roald Amundsen (1872-1928). In 1926 a similar airship, the Norge, carried Amundsen and Nobile on the first verified flight over the North Pole.
