Barometer and thermometer. Aneroid barometer (bottom) and thermometer (top) encased in wood. The thermometer scale is in Fahrenheit and Centigrade, with the values for 'freezing' and 'blood heat' marked. The barometer dial shows atmospheric pressure ranging from 26 to 32 inches of mercury. The aneroid barometer was invented in 1843, using a metal alloy that flexes and moves the pointer (black) as the pressure changes. The static pointer (brown) indicates the change since the last reading was taken. Atmospheric pressure is a good indication of weather conditions: low pressure for stormy weather and high pressure for dry weather.
